Official opening day is just around the corner, on November 24, and many are gearing up for the new season. But if you have never been to Whistler before you may have a few questions. Should I bring my own equipment? Where should I buy my lift ticket? Here are a few tips to help you plan your Whistler adventure.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zV5Q0lxIGJc/Tra49Ko-0pI/AAAAAAAAA38/EDAdzG9SgII/s400/DSC00181.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671924141687493266" />
If you have a small car, renting your ski or snowboard equipment in Whistler might be more convenient than bringing your own. Its also quite affordable, especially if you book your rental early. There are numerous rental shops around Whistler Village. Price shop before you go and decide what the best option is for you. While rental shops rent equipment, don’t forget to pack the rest of your gear (gloves, jacket, hat, goggles, and snow pants).

There are several options for purchasing lift tickets for Whistler and Blackcomb. Tickets are available directly at the slopes, but are cheaper if you book in advance. Alternatively, you can buy your tickets online and receive a 10% discount. If you’re only skiing for one day, you can find single-day discounted tickets at 7-Eleven stores in Vancouver or Squamish. The 7-Eleven in Whistler does not sell discounted lift tickets, so make a quick pit-stop on the drive to the slopes. Other options for discounted tickets include EDGE Cards for BC and Washington state residents, and Season Passes.

Have we missed anything? Extremely popular, storm watching is an outdoor activity (although some places are built for indoor viewing) with wonderful visual rewards. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and experience.

I'd say it's an add for the bucket list. In BC, storm watching takes you head to head with nature, and you're front and centre for the whole event. Some seasoned storm watchers will sit back, relax and observe the magnificent waves from a resort, while others will opt to participate outdoors, disappearing into sheets of ocean spray.

The pacific side of British Columbia is home to over 6000 islands and during the winter and early spring months the shores on the west coast erupt with waves and winds firing on all cylinders pounding the coastline.

There are waterfront resorts that allow you to enjoy the sounds and sights of a pacific storm while staying safe and dry inside behind large protective windows. You can spend hours watching the waves toss beach logs about, it's mesmerizing.

If adventure travel is more your cup of tea, you can suit up in head-to-toe rain gear and rubber boots, waterproof the camera and prepare to walk the beachings alongside the thundering waves and ocean sprays. Some resorts will supply guests with this kind of gear - you can always ask ahead for what's included before planning your trip!

While this is a fun experience, any one who ventures outside during a storm of this magnitude should be smart - there's strong, unpredictable winds, rogue waves that have the capacity to knock you down, and occasionally flying logs. While being outside is exciting, try to stay a minimum of 50 feet away from the tide line during these storms.

The most recognized locations for storm watching is in the Pacific Rim area on Vancouver Island - Tofino and Ucluelet - and also, off the northern tip of the Queen Charlotte Islands. The unprotected coastline fronts the open ocean and receives the strongest of the incoming storms. Many accommodations in the communities of Tofino and Ucluelet offer storm watching packages.

Exciting and a way to do it for those who play it safe, and those who are more adventurous! Start planning your trip today.

Vancouver in Fall

Fall in Vancouver is absolutely stunning. As the temperature cools down, the leaves change colour and the city becomes a mosaic of yellows, reds and purples. While it is colder (and often rainy), there is still lots to do during the fall. Here is a list of some of our favourites:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6HIgsQnG3Kk/TpTEQ4CTjGI/AAAAAAAAA14/QdUc01WWFtM/s400/27300135_78b64606fa_o.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5662366425710562402" />Photo by: PoYang_博仰

City walks and hikes
One of the best ways to enjoy the fall foliage is with a walk around the city.

• One of the most popular walks is around the Stanley Park Seawall. Alternatively you could go for a stroll through the park or around Lost Lagoon and admire the changing colours.
• Another favourite is the walk from Olympic Village to Granville Island. Walk along the water and enjoy the views of the harbour and downtown Vancouver. Once you reach Granville Island, treat yourself to a coffee and a pastry from the market.
• If you’re looking for more of a workout, check out the Grouse Grind (make sure to check the weather conditions first). If that’s a little too intense, the UBC Endowment Lands are always beautiful.

Festivals and Events
There is always something going on in Vancouver, and fall brings with it a number of different fall festivals and events.

• VIFF is the Vancouver International Film Festival. It happens every year and is on now until October 14, 2011. The festival showcases films from around the world and is not to be missed!
• If you like a good scare, check out Fright Nights at the PNE. This Halloween event is on from October 14 - 31, 2011. There will be 5 haunted houses and several rides to enjoy.
• The Chocolate Festival is an absolute must for chocolate lovers! Unfortunately, this annual festival may not happen in 2011, but make sure to check it out in 2012.
• The Farmer’s Markets are still on for the first few weeks in October. Head down to Trout Lake, Kits or Lonsdale Quay for amazing produce and other yummy treats.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LW_nHFqRQtI/TpTZ6fVjBdI/AAAAAAAAA2E/geGJs7S45qs/s400/4103753847_d6ee2a6cbf_o.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5662390230379070930" />Photo of Stanley Park by afcone

Indoors Activities
It’s Vancouver, so it’s liable to rain. When it does, head inside - there’s still loads to do!

• Get cultured at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The gallery has a wonderful collection and always offers interesting and innovative exhibitions. Right now you can check out The Distance Between You and Me, featuring 3 artists from Vancouver, Los Angeles and Guadalajara. (On until January 2012)
• If you’re visiting Vancouver with kids take them to the Aquarium, Science World or the Granville Island Kid’s Market.
• If you’re an avid reader, head down to the Central Vancouver Library downtown.
• Eat! Vancouver has tons of different restaurants with cuisine from all over the world. Whether you’re craving Dim Sum, Italian, sushi, Mexican or something else entirely, there’s a restaurant to accommodate you.

Hockey!
Fall means the start of the hockey season. Catch a Canucks’ game at Roger’s Arena or a local sports bar.

Have we missed something? What are your favourite fall activities in Vancouver?

Vancouver Island Spotlight
From the air, Vancouver Island appears like a giant bird in full flight. Vancouver is fabulous, but the smaller city - and also the capital of the province - is located at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. One of the best places to go for Victoria BC whale watching is Orca Spirit Adventures. Situated in Victoria’s world-famous inner harbour, Orca Spirit’s three-hour long tours take passengers into the thrilling waters of the Haro and Juan de Fuca Straits– the best location in the world for witnessing whales and marine life in their natural habitats.

Through the months of April to October, Victoria whale watching passengers have the chance to view the area’s resident pods, called J, K and L. There are over 100 orcas in these pods, which gives passengers a 95% chance of seeing an orca. They may see others types of whales also, such as Gray, Minke and Humpback. Other than whales, it is not unusual to also spot Elephant and Harbour seals, Bald Eagles, Cormorants, Dall Porpoises and Harbour Porpoises.

There are a wide selection of vessels to choose from at Orca Spirit. If you want a wet and thrilling Victoria BC whale watching tour, choose a Zodiac, which holds 12 passengers. The Zodiacs boast an exciting and safe ride and have full washrooms on board as well as comfortable padded seating. Orca Spirit’s fleet includes larger vessels as well, with luxurious interiors, 360 degree rooftop decks and surround systems for listening to the whales. The largest boats offer a full bar service and are available not only for whale watching tours, but also for weddings and parties.

Orca Spirit recognizes the importance of safe and sustainable Victoria whale watching practices, so they follow the strict guidelines set out by the Pacific Whale Watch Association. In areas of unknown or suspected marine activity, boat operators drive with caution and continuously look for marine mammal activity. They always approach whales from the side and never get too close–100 metres max. If they happen upon a whale by accident, operators immediately cut their engines and wait for the whale to pass. Guides also monitor the output produced by their depth sounders, sonar and exhaust systems.

City Snap Guide: The Okanagan

The Okanagan is a beautiful area within the interior of British Columbia. Camping, swimming, wine tours, great food, not to mention incredible golf courses and more are all available in the Okanagan! One of the warmest regions in all of Canada, the Okanagan is an incredible place to vacation all year round. It's comprised of the major centers, Kelowna, Penticton, Vernon and Osoyoos. During the summer months you can enjoy the hot, sandy beaches, wineries, outdoor and water activities, especially in and around Okanagan Lake - which provides the whole area with fantastic swimming and is a beautiful backdrop to all the wineries and golf courses! In the winter, there are popular ski resorts located in the rolling hills of the valley. Welcome to one of the most beautiful places on earth. Have you ever been to the Okanagan? Feel free to share your own tips below at the bottom in the comments section.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TIlcwfI8MWI/AAAAAAAAArM/Es7ouYI7Fh8/s400/pic0001%5B1%5D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5515041206754357602" />
Kelowna & Penticton

The largest city in the interior of British Columbia and on the eastern side of Okanagan Lake, Kelowna is the cultural capital of the Okanagan. With many galleries, museums, gardens, public art displays and eclectic shops, Kelowna is sure to spark your creative spirit. Vacationing in Kelowna is absolutely wonderful - the area offers natural beauty, sunshine, fifteen fabulous golf courses, incredible views, and internationally renowned gardens. Kelowna is also home to the elusive Ogopogo, the questionably mythical lake creature. Waterslides, paintballing fields, and tons of water activities are available on the lake. If you leave Kelowna, you'll drive through the surrounding communities of Westbank, Summerland and Peachland (the jewel of the Okanagan), finally coming upon Penticton. A four-season destination complete with sandy beaches, fish filled lakes (bring your fishing license!), ski hills, orchards, wineries and golf courses. Sandwiched between two warm-water lakes, Penticton is perfect for those who love water sports or relaxing.

Vernon & Osoyoos

Vernon is surrounded by mountains and has something all year round, from orchards and wineries to ski resorts. Vernon overlooks three lakes and so the summertime is filled with fishing, kayaking and scuba diving. In the winter the city hosts one of the largest winter carnivals this side of Quebec! Vernon is also home to Silver Star Mountain, a fabulous ski resort that offers everything from skiing and snowboarding, to dog sledding and snowmobiling! Osoyoos is Canada's only desert, and is home to fifteen estate British Columbian wineries. Osoyoos is Canada's "lifestyle community" and has something for everyone. It's also an amazing place to camp in the summer time - but bring your sunblock, it gets scorching hot. Osoyoos has two stand-out cultural and historic attractions: the Osoyoos Museum and the Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre. The high quality of the museum's exhibits has made it "The Best Small Town Museum in BC," according to the University of British Columbia, while its Nk'Mip Day School Art Collection is particularly good.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 265px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TIlckVl1FoI/AAAAAAAAArE/GiHxRqtf7q8/s400/okanagan_valley_bc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5515040998032742018" />
Wineries

The Okanagan is known for it's picturesque setting, and is considered the ideal wine valley - especially since many of the wineries overlook Okanagan Lake. The different mountain ranges act as backdrops painting a canvas of blues and purples, the forests are a melting pot of greens and the lakes are hues of azure and deep navy blues. For sea kayaking, the BC coastline with the Pacific Ocean at its door forms long, deep fjords and inlets that are teeming with fish and the lands are abundant with wildlife.

Desolation Sound is a sea kayakers paradise. Paddling amongst the towering mountains of the British Columbia Coast Mountain range is a truly awe inspiring adventure. Desolation Sound has a Mediterranean climate which makes it the perfect place to paddle in May, June early July and September where you can count on having the best weather on the coast.

Carved into the inaccessible wilderness of the Canadian mainland over the ages, the soaring peaks of the coastal mountains tumble to the waters edge in a jumble of river mouths and small islands. The rugged terrain has stopped any road access into Desolation; kayaks are the best way to visit this majestic and unspoiled area. There are few places on earth as stunningly beautiful as Desolation Sound. This is kayaking trip where you spend more time looking up than looking down. The calm waters make this ideal for first time paddlers and the rugged mountian vistas make it suitable for anyone looking to experience some of Mother nature's most amazing works of art.

Things to do in Kelowna

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TGl6kt8f6QI/AAAAAAAAAns/QKg5gQNvRFA/s400/lake_okanagan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506066790664366338" />
Swimming in Kelowna

If the weather allows, and between June and September this is highly likely, swimming will no doubt be on the agenda. The H2O centre on Gordon Drive offers great entertainment for those wishing to cool off, with slides, rapids, hot tubs, a wave machine, a surf simulator, and an Olympic-sized pool. This is one of many indoor pools in the area, with The Johnson-Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre catering for those on Westbank who would prefer not to drive.

Beaches in Kelowna

If an indoor pool is not the right environment, Kelowna does rest on the edge of the 84 mile Okanagan Lake, and so there are plenty of beaches to relax on. City Park is perhaps the most central, and boasts acres of grassy shade, as well as sports fields and a water park for children. Gyro Beach on Lakeshore Road has multiple volleyball courts and refreshments available from the red apple stall, or for a quieter sand and water combination, try Gellatly on Westbank.

Extreme Sports in Kelowna

With such a vast lake, the Okanagan Valley hosts a variety of water sports during the summer months. Jet-skis are readily available for rent, as are light watercrafts with a range of pull-along floats. Away from the water, there are places such as Silver Star Mountain Resort that offer rigorous tracks for mountain/quad-biking, although they are a little further away from Kelowna city centre. For the winter months, Big White Ski Resort promotes all types winter sports, and offers ski/board hire as well as lessons for all ages, and even horse/dog sleds.

Indoor and Evening Activities in Kelowna

With such an active populace, there is also a variety of local activities that do not rely on the weather. Within Kelowna city limits there are multiple cinemas, bowling alleys, restaurants and bars. Earls on Bernard Avenue offers dining with a view of the lake, and is a matter of metres from the Paramount Theatre, which shows late night movies on occasion.

If restricted by a budget, there are still countless opportunities to enjoy the Kelowna cityscape. Knox Mountain and Mission Creek present public parks or countryside treks, while downtown Kelowna tends to host many types of evening entertainment during the summer. Any time of year, the vibrant Canadian city of Kelowna is able to provide leisure endeavors for all.

Whale Watching in Victoria

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 258px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TGSGDC8-VeI/AAAAAAAAAm8/tXEfYTJwq4M/s400/Whale+Watching+BC1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504672031443932642" />
Victoria BC whale watching is a unique opportunity not to be missed! It is quite popular amongst tourists as it is not very often that people get the chance to immerse themselves in nature in such an intimate way. Seeing the beautiful marine creatures in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience for many travellers.

Orca Spirit offers 3-hour Victoria whale watching tours, with the prime months for sightings being April to October. The spring/fall tours leave at 9am and 1pm, and the summer tours depart at 9am, 1pm, and 5pm. For those who book in advance, additional tour times may be accommodated, and large bookings can arrange for flexible departure times. There are three pods of resident orcas in the Juan de Fuca and Haro Straits, which equates to frequent sightings. The whale watching tours have a high success rate of 95%.

Harbour porpoise, Dalls porpoise, Harbour and Elephant seals, otters, and marine birds are also often spotted on tours. There is a chance of seeing Humpback, Gray, and Minke whales as well. All in all, there are many great sights to take in–from the oceanic wildlife to the gorgeous seascape.

Orca Spirit presents you with two choices of vessels: a zodiac or a larger covered boat (both have onboard washrooms). The open zodiac offers adventure and thrills as the wind whips through your hair, and the covered boat has luxurious indoor seating, comfort, and a liquor license! The covered boat is recommended for those who have bad necks or backs, pregnant women, and anyone whose health is generally frail. Kids under the age of six are only allowed on the covered boat.

In addition, custom charters can be booked for larger groups in the following vessels: the zodiacs, which hold up to 12 people, are zippy little boats that manoeuvre easily and offer an exhilarating ride; the Pacific Explorer holds 70 passengers and has all of the amenities; the Orca Spirit, the company’s signature vessel, was designed specifically for whale watching, maximizing comfort and safety (holds 45 passengers).

Mountain Biking in Whistler

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TGB0ASvDVlI/AAAAAAAAAl8/iaO-vkY3y7A/s200/family-biking-winter-park-rentals.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503526293024757330" />Situated about 120 km north of Vancouver on the Highway 99 is Whistler, acknowledged as the ‘Natural Year-Round Playground.’ With its soothing mountain air, pristine clear lakes, and luxuriant emerald forests, Whistler is a mecca for a host of recreational activities during both winter and summer.

During the winter, Whistler becomes a sought after destination for enjoying skiing and other activities like snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and sleigh riding. When comes to summer activities, the activities that can be enjoyed here are endless from golf, tennis, and staking to boating, fishing, and canoeing. Aside these activities, Whistler renders world class facilities for mountain biking.

As per the level and expertise of bikers, different types of mountain biking trails are available in Whistler, such as, downhill tracks, technical single track, cross country, paved valley track, and wide single track. For novice, one of the best trails to start with would be the 35 km long Valley Trail. This trail serves as a commuter trail, and a bike riding through it leads to some of the picturesque lakes, parks, and neighborhood destinations.

Another popular biking trail in Whistler is Lost Lake Park, which is surrounded by pristine alpine lake. Located within easy reach of almost all facilities in Whistler and Blackcomb, Lost Lake Park consists of a series of mountain trails, each of them rendering single as well as wide single track with plush nettle. This trail is most suitable for beginners who want to take mountain biking lessons quite easy. However, the trails found in the park are not only for beginners but also for advanced riders. For riders seeking adventure and fun, the park offers trails such as the Frank Zappa single-track.

In Whistler, beginners can also take advantage of the Whistler Interpretive Forest’s network of trails that are exclusively designed for novices, such as Highline, Far Side Trail, Riverside Trail, and Ridge Trail. Some excellent trails are available around Cheakamus Lake, which in turn is a part of the spectacular Garibaldi Provincial Park. However, the trail is packed with hikers during the summer season.

For intermediates, Whistler has some excellent options for mountain biking in the form of Trash in Function Junction, Big Timber trail in Kadenwood, and Green Lake Loop that runs across the eastern side of the Green Lake, from Lost Lake Park to Wedgemount. There are also a couple of trails, especially for intermediates, outside the boundaries of Whistler like Brandywine Falls cross country trail that runs through the Whistler Interpretive Forest, which in turn consists of a blend of double and single tracks.

Whistler is also home to a continuum of expert trails including Industrial Disease. Also, Whistler boasts of a good number of epic trails such as the 42 km long the Flank Trail and the Rainbow Trail.

Why BC Should be on Your Bucket List

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 126px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TDYZcSxLiPI/AAAAAAAAAlE/qCPj68EUnQE/s200/Carmanah_creek_-Rainforest_nature_tours.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491604769490045170" />Canada’s westernmost province, British Columbia is located between the Pacific Ocean and the province of Alberta. British Columbia has three main mountain ranges and two thirds of the province is covered in forest. BC boasts miles of natural beauty and is teeming with diverse wildlife. British Columbia is also home to the city of Vancouver, which hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics.

With beaches, rainforests, snow-capped mountains and even a pocket of desert, British Columbia really is like no place on earth. On the west coast, British Columbia’s coastal rainforest is the largest temperate rainforest that remains intact in the world. The untamed, natural beauty of this forest draws tourists from all over the world. To the east, the Rocky Mountain range passes through British Columbia and BC’s Rockies attract millions of visitors every year. The interior of the province is characterized by lush, fertile valleys which are perfect for growing produce.

British Columbia has 1000 provincial parks and many national parks. Many of these parks offer campgrounds and gorgeous hiking trails. In the south east of BC, Glacier National Park has more than 400 glaciers which pour over the steep rugged mountains. Mount Revelstoke National Park in the west has everything from rainforests of ancient cedar and pine trees to alpine meadows and tundra. This majestic park is a birdwatchers paradise.

From the forests to the ocean, British Columbia has a rich diversity of wildlife. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TDYZiJUzBuI/AAAAAAAAAlM/fS4ud7dhbRk/s200/BC+Coast.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491604870034294498" />Wildlife viewing tours with local guides who are trained in tracking are increasingly popular with tourists. On such tours you can see elk, deer, moose, bald eagles, bears and if you’re lucky you might even see a cougar or a wolf! Whale watching tours provide you with a chance to view diverse marine life and offer an adventure that passengers won’t soon forget.

BC’s natural wilderness makes it the perfect destination for outdoor activities. There are an endless number of trails for hiking and many lakes and rivers for fishing, canoeing, kayaking or white water rafting. There are golf courses all over the province and BC’s temperate weather means that many of them are open year-round. The various mountain ranges in BC offer a prime setting for mountain biking.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TDYaAZvDxlI/AAAAAAAAAlU/nXEFHcHZGnM/s200/whistler.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491605389835486802" />For those adventure enthusiasts, BC has a number of exciting activities. Enjoy rock climbing? Try the Chief in Squamish or the Skaha in Penticton. There are various destinations that offer zip lining, sky diving and bungee jumping as well. In the winter, venture up one of BC’s mountains, such as Whistler, and discover skiing or snowboarding. In the north, even dog sledding is a possibility!

If you’re not the outdoorsy type, there is still lots to do in British Columbia. Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and home to the world famous Butchart Gardens. Also check out the Provincial Museum, the Butterfly Garden and have high tea at the Empress Hotel. Vancouver is BC’s largest city. Here you will find art galleries, shopping, fine dining, beautiful beaches and exciting night life.

Due to the fertility of the Okanagan Valley in the interior of BC, most of BC’s wines come from this beautiful region. Wine tours occur year round and many orchards and vineyards offer wine tours where visitors can have a tasting and do some shopping.

Overall, British Columbia is a beautiful destination that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Whistler White Water Rafting

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 184px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TDYWn7fSAmI/AAAAAAAAAk8/LhazwUjM3Yc/s200/expedition_left_img.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491601670864503394" />The Vancouver, Coast & Mountains region has a wealth of rushing rivers fuelled by melting snows and regular rainfall – perfect for whitewater rafting. There are few places in the world where so many commercially-rafted rivers are within such easy reach of a major city. When the snow melts in the Whistler area, the glacier-fed waters come to life. Most of the Whistler rafting companies offer excursions on the Birkenhead, Green, Squamish, Elaho and Cheakamus Rivers.

Motor-powered, paddle-powered, and oar-powered rafting excursions are all available. While on a rafting tour, look for bald eagles above, black bears or deer on the shore, and glacier-capped summits in the distance.

A trip down the Green River is an excellent introduction to paddle rafting. For more experienced rafters, continuous whitewater opportunities exist on the Birkenhead, which rushes past old-growth forests and the ice-capped mountaintops of Pemberton.

Birkenhead River is Class III; Green River is Class II. The best time to go is between May to September.

Summer Ferry Schedule

Tsawwassen to Pender Island (Otter Bay)
IN EFFECT: June 30, 2010 to September 6, 2010

Leave Days Stops/Transfers Arrive

8:40 AM Sat 1 stop Galiano, transfer at Mayne 11:25 AM

9:50 AM Sun & Holiday Mon 1 stop Galiano, Transfer at Mayne 12:15 PM

10:20 AM Mon*, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri 2 stops Galiano, Mayne 12:45 PM

1:50 PM Sat 1 stop Galiano 3:35 PM

4:25 PM Fri 1 stop Galiano, Transfer at Mayne 6:50 PM

5:00 PM Sat Transfer at Swartz Bay 8:40 PM

6:55 PM Sun & Holiday Mon Transfer at Mayne, 1 stop Galiano 9:45 PM

7:40 PM Mon*, Tue, Wed, Thu 2 stops Galiano, Mayne 9:55 PM

8:25 PM Fri 1 stop Mayne 10:05 PM

During the summer there are two vessels on the Vancouver - Gulf Islands route. Few wine-producing regions in the world can match the Okanagan’s combination of mountains, lakes, fresh air and intense sunlight with so many grape varieties.

Over a dozen wineries are located in Kelowna with over 60 in the whole Okangan Valley region. All wineries offer wine tasting. As well, several wineries have facility tours to teach visitors the art of winemaking. Wine tours can last from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the winery.

Many wineries have food services available. Gourmet regional cuisine, tapas-style fare or cheese and fruit platters are served either indoors or on protected patios, all with spectacular lake and valley views. Reservations are not required. Tours are open to people of all ages; however children under the age of 19 are not permitted to taste the wine. The sun-drenched valley surrounding Kelowna is dotted with farm-gate wineries too, where each vintage is lovingly bottled by hand.

For the Local Wineries Tasting Schedule click here.

White Water Rafting

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 312px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TBqf6XuSsJI/AAAAAAAAAf0/Yu6at97Qggo/s400/white_water_rafting.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483871321426407570" />
Rafting’s a sport accomplished while sitting down. But don’t confuse it with couch surfing. If you’re in a paddleboat, the guide relies on you for power, meaning forward and reverse strokes on a moment’s notice. And the strokes have to count--you can’t be lazy when things get rough. Since rafts don’t have guardrails (or the ability to right themselves), swimming--while restricted with lifejacket and in current--is also a real possibility.

Tour operators usually provide everything you need, including wetsuits, lifejackets, paddles, and rafts. Don’t become a private river runner unless you have ample space to store your gear and the towing capacity (truck and/or trailer) to get it to the river. Aside from the raft and paddles (or frame and oars), other essentials include a pump, patch kit, and a throw rope and lifejackets for every participants. Other frills include coolers, cargo nets, and drybags.

Under the guidance of professionals, you’ll learn the difference between paddle and oar rafts, and such techniques as highsiding (jumping to the high side of the raft to avoid flipping), keeping the boat straight and rigging flip lines to right the boat in the event of a capsize. Your best bet: Sign up for a multiday trip, where you'll also learn the basics of river camping, including the age-old art of setting up the river toilet.

Speak the Language
Class I-VI: An international scale of difficulty for rating rapids, with I being the easiest and VI being technically unrunnable.
Highside: Jumping to the "high" side of the raft to level it out and prevent capsizing when it's pinned against a rock or stuck in a hydraulic.
Self-bailer: A modern line of raft with an inflatable floor, allowing water that comes in to flow back out without the need for bailing.

Why Visit BC?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TBfg8YnB0dI/AAAAAAAAAfs/OCEiAaD1If0/s200/BC+Coast.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483098399349789138" />Why? Other spots for mountain biking in the Victoria area are Millstream Highlands, Burnt Bridge, Can-Am Trails and the Hartland Surplus Lands/Mount Work Park.

The City of Nanaimo, which lies on the protected eastern side, features some of the best mountain biking on Vancouver Island. Here the most famous course is the Ultimate Abyss, that's technically very difficult. Other trails in the Nanaimo area are Westwood Lake Loop and the Westwood Ridge/Rocky Road/3 Creeks Trail.

Next on your must riding list is found in Parksville, where crews of mountain bikers have created a biker's park and maintain excellent trails. The A.M.C. Top Bridge Mountain Bike Park offers eight different moderate trails. For a more difficult ride, try the Hammerfest Race Course. Not far from Parksville is Hornby Island where there are twenty-one trails for your riding enjoyment.

For breath taking views and stellar mountain biking, the Courtenay Comox area is where it's at. If you're looking for that demanding ride both physically and technically the B21/Boston Main is waiting for you. Other challenging tracks are Tomato Creek, Nymph Falls and Arbutus. For the moderate level rider there's Salamander, Bears Bait, Bevan Trail, Bics and The Dump or take it easy on flat single tracks with a ride on Seal Bay Nature Park.

Campbell River, where you will find world class fishing, is no slouch when it comes to mountain biking. Despite these conditions, the rich marine environment of British Columbia attracts divers who consider bad visibility and bulky drysuits to be no obstacle. This means there are plenty of dive schools in the province's larger cities, and learning to scuba dive in a place like British Columbia will thoroughly prepare you for easier conditions farther south.

Step 1

Investigate the local scuba shops and their associated schools, as well as any <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TAU8Wz9sszI/AAAAAAAAAa8/UxGiBpGh8bY/s200/diving+bc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5477850884369855282" />private instructors in your area of British Columbia. If you need to attain Open Water (OW) certification quickly, use the shops' websites and some phone calls to find the shops that cooperate with the e-learning program offered by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). This allows you to complete your coursework at home, and then complete the necessary training dives in as little as one weekend. You will be required to submit an RTSC form stating you are in good health and free of compromising medical conditions, such as heart disease or asthma.

Step 2

Invest in a rash guard top or shorty suit and a pair of wool socks just for diving. Water temperatures around British Columbia never climb out of the chilly lower 50s Fahrenheit, and sometimes drop as low as the mid-40s Fahrenheit even in the summer. Your dive class will include the necessary 7-mm semi-drysuit or drysuit to endure these cold waters, but a few extra touches will keep your warmer.

Step 3

Ask your diving instructor about where your four open water training dives, all necessary for OW certification, will take place. If you have a particular interest, you may be able to make requests for a suitable dive site to meet them. If you want to see the big octopi of British Columbia, the South Islet of Passage Island is an easy dive site with octopi, a sandy bottom and moderate depths, so it is suitable for training.

Step 4

Confirm your diving skills by signing on for more dives via dive shop-organized boat <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 136px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/TAU8pVz8D6I/AAAAAAAAAbE/SzwFHd-mvNQ/s200/Diving+Red+Sea.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5477851202693369762" />dives or shore dives immediately after finishing your OW course. British Columbia mixes challenging diving conditions and a rich marine environment, making it a golden opportunity for further practice. If you master your basic OW skills in 45-degree Fahrenheit water and 15-foot visibility, both normal for a Vancouver summer, you will be well-prepared for the much warmer, clearer conditions of Thailand, the Florida Keys or the Red Sea.

The Gorgeous Gulf Islands

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S_1sgz5-hYI/AAAAAAAAAZ0/oeOgLLMsl58/s400/bc_coast_2007_1187098860_img_0689.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475652032897385858" />
The Gulf Islands consist of over a dozen islands in the Strait of Georgia, off the coast of British Columbia’s mainland.

Apart from these, Whistler has to its credit some excellent parks that are exclusively designed for mountain biking. Of which, one of the most popular is the Whistler Bike Park, whose highlights, among many others, are over 200 km of lift serviced trails as well as mountainous pathways, jump park areas, access lifts including Whistler Gondola and Garbanzo Chairs, and dirt trails via canopied forests. Dirt Jump Park, within the Rebagliati Park, is also a great facility in Whistler for mountain biking. Among the highlights of the trail are long climbs, challenging rock faces, elevated bridges, and picturesque views.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S-sZj7hKFXI/AAAAAAAAAW0/JGk1RbHmFyI/s200/family-biking-winter-park-rentals.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470494277434479986" />There are certain prerequisites in order to make your Whistler Mountain biking holidays perfect and enjoyable. Well marked and plentiful bike lanes make biking easy, especially for the city’s many people using an electric bike kit” to help them conquer Vancouver’s hills. These riders can be seen zipping around the city, quickly getting from point A to B and not worrying about the rain or traffic. There are a number of popular destinations for anglers along the coast of British Columbia, where salmon, cod and halibut are found in huge populations.

Depending on the type of fishing you prefer, you may want to spend your entire vacation in one location or move around sampling the opportunities at different locales along the coast. Charter fishing in British Columbia gives you the opportunity to see more of the area than you might otherwise enjoy. Chartering your own vessel for a vacation will provide the freedom to explore the coast freely without the limitations that a group charter might impose. This gives you the capability of designing an itinerary that suits your needs and interests. It can also allow you to take the advice of some knowledgeable locals who can direct you towards the prime spots.

The coastline waters off British Columbia enjoy a very long salmon fishing season. Every winter as the salmon return to spawn, the many islands along their migration path interrupt their journey towards the rivers where they return to spawn. This creates a surprisingly long salmon season that lasts from May to September.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S7udeUlBEUI/AAAAAAAAAQc/2kKiH9i7Y4c/s200/bcfishingvacations.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457128517735092546" />In order to bring home a treat from the open waters of Canada you will need a Tidal license for saltwater fishing. You can apply for a Tidal license online from the Fisheries and Oceans Canada website, although in order to fish for halibut, you must apply for that license in person. The Ministry of Environment issues Non-tidal licenses. Through the license website, you can also download and review regulations for the season, to be certain you understand the rules in the region you hope to visit.

King salmon fishing in British Columbia is especially popular. If salmon fishing is on your agenda, you will need to pay a conservation surcharge in the form of a Salmon Stamp, the profits of which help to fund restoration projects for this species. If you are chartering a boat in Canada, or are using a package tour operator who specializes in vacation, charter or tour directors should be able to advise you on required licenses and other paperwork for your trip.

There are many companies that offer charter fishing in British Columbia. It is a popular destination for traveling, due to the beauty of the area, the abundant opportunities and waters in Canada, as well as the excellent facilities and tour operators that are available. British Columbia also has a lot to offer to any non-fishers in the party, so if you want to bring the rest of the family along then there will be plenty for them to do while you are off enjoying the water.

All visitors entering Canada are required to present a passport, even if traveling from the U.S. While U.S. citizens are exempt from visa requirements, it is required for other tourists, so you should check before you try to enter the country.

BC and Washington State Improve Cross-Border Travel

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S6z4uSjNi7I/AAAAAAAAAOo/PfBpyThxr9c/s200/prestonAmtrakLogo.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453006722976025522" />Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond and Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Secretary Paula Hammond today announced an extension of the second Amtrak Cascades train service between Vancouver and Seattle, as well as measures to reduce wait times at border crossings. The announcement concluded the first meeting of the British Columbia-Washington State joint Transportation Executive Council, which was held by video conference.

“Today’s meeting continues our constructive and collaborative approach to addressing our shared transportation challenges and opportunities,” said Bond. “By extending the second daily Amtrak train service, visitors will not only have another travel option during the upcoming summer tourist season, but it is also an essential first step in developing and advancing a shared, long-term vision of high-speed rail connecting Vancouver and Seattle. This will provide more information when considering the viability of making the second train permanent, as well as gauging demand for future high-speed rail.”

“The success of this additional Amtrak Cascades service reinforces what we already know – that intercity passenger rail service is a valuable transportation resource and people are using it,” said Paula Hammond, Washington transportation secretary. “As we continue to grow this service, it will provide more travel options for Pacific Northwest travellers, reduce congestion at our border crossings and help our environment.”

The second daily Amtrak Cascades train began service on Aug. 19, 2009 as a pilot project, running through the end of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The Canada Border Services Agency has since agreed to extend the provision of border clearance services for the second Amtrak train through the end of September 2010.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 137px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S6z5DwzMfTI/AAAAAAAAAOw/X4dGF8RpJtk/s200/hiking_British_Columbia_4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453007091873381682" />During the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, amtrak Cascades train service carried over 11,000 passengers. Popularity of the Amtrak Cascades and the international exposure received by the region during the Games has opened the door for new tourism opportunities, with significant new interest being expressed in two-nation tours. Amtrak Cascades is operated by Amtrak in partnership with the Washington and Oregon Departments of Transportation.

Investments to more efficiently move people and goods through the border crossings were also discussed. This includes $7 million in U.S. federal Coordinated Border Infrastructure funding for Washington State to upgrade the Advanced Traveller Information System (ATIS) for Interstate 5 between Bellingham and the border in Blaine. The ATIS provides real-time information on wait times at border crossings, allowing motorists the option to select an alternate crossing. These improvements will allow an expansion of WSDOT’s web-based traffic congestion maps and include many new cameras, an additional electronic message sign and expansion of highway advisory radio to communicate border wait times to travelers. Fibre optic cable will replace much slower and less reliable communication technology to ensure accurate and timely traveler information.

British Columbia will explore partnering opportunities to expand the ATIS in British Columbia to include the Aldergrove/Lynden (Hwy 13) and Huntingdon/Sumas (Hwy 11) border crossings. In B.C., the ATIS is currently in place at the Peace Arch (Hwy 99) and Pacific (Hwy 15) border crossings only. All four crossing in Washington State are served by ATIS.

The British Columbia-Washington State joint Transportation Executive Council is co-chaired by B.C.’s Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure and Washington State’s Department of Transportation Secretary. Its next meeting will take place in the fall 2010.

Family Mountain Biking

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S5_GHq52-dI/AAAAAAAAANI/x0ie_eNIZ98/s200/family-biking-winter-park-rentals.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449291909219940818" />You may find planning a vacation or what must be done during your vacation can be a challenging task you may undertake. Vancouver is a cycle-friendly destination and has more than 300km/186mi of bike routes throughout the city. Since 1990, the city has constructed bikeways that connect to form an impressive cycling network.

Routes wind through parks, in urban forests, and by ocean settings, such as the popular Stanley Park seawall.

Perhaps Vancouver's most irresistible cycling tour is along the Seaside Bicycle Route. Approximately 29km/18mi long each way, the path extends from Spanish Bank near the University of British Columbia, through the West End's Stanley Park and on to Coal Harbour, with its luxurious sailboats and yachts.

Stanley Park Seawall

Located just minutes from downtown Vancouver in the city's West End, Stanley Park is an urban oasis.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 118px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S3HcwFXengI/AAAAAAAAANA/5agH2Ps4DTc/s200/stanleyparkminutes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436368943845383682" />Cycle counter-clockwise around the Stanley Park Seawall along a paved path past the famous Brockton Point totem poles, under the Lions Gate Bridge, along two of the city's most popular beaches, and finish at English Bay.

Approximately 10km/6mi in length, the seawall path boasts spectacular views of mountains, ocean, forest and city.

Stanley Park is within easy cycling or walking distance of downtown Vancouver. This is an easy cycling route that takes approximately 1-2 hours.

Seaside Bicycle Route

Arguably the world's most beautiful urban bike path, the Seaside Bicycle Route begins at Sunset Beach, on the northeast shore of English Bay.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S3HceBbQCaI/AAAAAAAAAMw/QWDCyRppuI8/s200/false-creek-seawall-granville-island.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436368633549818274" />Cycle past marinas, parks and some of the city's priciest condos on a paved, pedestrian-free route up to the head of False Creek (a pedestrian path runs alongside the bike path to that point). From there, the route traverses a combination of roadways and shared pedestrian/cycle paths until it reaches Granville Island, beyond which it's pedestrian/cycle all the way to Spanish Bank beach. About 20km/12mi, roundtrip, it's one of the most pleasurable ways to experience Vancouver's famous ocean-mountain-city views.

Highlights of the route include the trendy Yaletown neighbourhood; Science World, which is housed in a spherical, silver building originally built for Expo '86; Granville Island, an artsy enclave filled with theatres, restaurants, market stalls, artists' studios and specialty shops; and Jericho Beach, a popular sunbathing, picnicking, fishing and sailing destination.
This route is a direct extension of the Stanley Park Seawall, so it's possible to lengthen a ride by beginning with the seawall route. Or, connect to a forested trail system in Pacific Spirit Park from Spanish Bank at the end of the route.
Sunset Beach is located just south of the downtown core, below the intersection of Thurlow Street and Beach Avenue. This easy bike route takes approximately 3 hours roundtrip to complete.

Olympic Torch Relay

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 189px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S3CA92F-9kI/AAAAAAAAAMo/2QwzTKEbs0c/s200/OlympicTorch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435986550217176642" />
The Olympic Flame or Olympic Torch is a symbol of the Olympic Games. Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lie in ancient Greece, where a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. The fire was reintroduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and it has been part of the modern Olympic Games ever since. The torch relay of modern times which transports the flame from Greece to the various designated sites of the games had no ancient precedent and was introduced by Carl Diem at the controversial 1936 Berlin Olympics.

The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay began in Canada on October 30, 2009 and will conclude at the Opening Ceremony signaling the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games this Friday (February 12, 2010). The torch has been carried by bike, dragon boat, dog-sled to name a few. The Olympics are almost here but you still have a chance to enjoy this symbolic event. The torch will travel from Richmond to West Vancouver on February 10, from West Vancouver to Vancouver on the 11th and then on to BC Place on the 12th.

To figure out when the torch is traveling through your neighborhood click here

Visit Beautiful Victoria

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S2yYK8G5XII/AAAAAAAAAMY/fpXaWQ9SFJA/s200/vicharb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434886164030512258" />When you’re visiting Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics, why not pop over to the island and visit the spectacular capital of British Columbia? Granville Island: Be sure to check out Granville Island when you come to Vancouver. Located at the edge of downtown Vancouver, Granville Island was once an industrial area but today is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Shop at the public market or one of the many artsy shops, enjoy performances outdoor musical performances, have a drink at the brewery or a bite at one of the many restaurants.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S2ivPdq8uRI/AAAAAAAAAL4/8FDViVepyog/s200/2986137.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433785630620170514" />2. Vancouver’s Beaches: One of the reasons our city is among the most livable in the world is public access to some truly beautiful beaches. You can enjoy this natural amenity in many different ways. Cycle around the ocean, play in the sand with your kids, swim, windsurf, or sail the Pacific. We have special areas that have been cordoned-off for swimming, ensuring maximum lifeguard coverage. One such beach is English Bay. English Bay is located in the West End of downtown Vancouver. This waterside neighborhood is at once lively and quaint and a great spot to walk around, shop or have a drink.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 165px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S2ivozn4P7I/AAAAAAAAAMA/_xIADgePVmE/s200/Photo_Shoot_-_Stanley_Park_Bridge.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433786066009604018" />3. Stanley Park: Stanley Park is recognized around the globe as one of the great parks of the world! Vancouver's first park and one of the city's main tourist attractions, Stanley Park is an evergreen oasis of 400 hectares close to the downtown core. Its natural west coast atmosphere offering a back drop of majestic cedar, hemlock and fir trees embraces visitors and transports them to an environment rich in tranquility. The park abounds in wildlife and its features appeal to the naturalist, the plant lover or one who would do nothing more than relax in beautiful surroundings.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S2iv0ZwbgGI/AAAAAAAAAMI/9XmKMQF4wKQ/s200/1085865-Grouse-Mountain-0.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433786265224577122" />4. Grouse Mountain: Grouse Mountain is a year-round mountaintop playground that offers hiking, helicopter tours, paragliding, picnics and logging shows, sleigh rides and skiing...and magical views of the city and its surroundings. The Grouse Grind, billed as the world's biggest stair-climb, is the outdoor venue these days to work out at and to meet new friends. During summer months, hundreds of trim, fresh-faced hikers ascend the steep-sided mountain from its trailhead on the east side of the Grouse Mountain parking lot at the north end of Capilano Road, usually in groups of twos and threes. Mount Fromme, to the east of Grouse Mountain, sports a number of trails that are open to mountain biking, most of which intersect with Old Grouse Mountain Highway.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S2iv-q77QvI/AAAAAAAAAMQ/wff7xH_YaYs/s200/P1030681.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433786441634890482" />5. Historic Gastown: Stroll down the cobbled streets, explore its historic buildings, courtyards and mews, enjoy its unique shopping, nightlife, attractions and special events. Established the same year that Canada became a nation, Gastown grew into Canada’s third largest city and one of its most cosmopolitan. But the Gastown district today retains its historic charm, independent spirit and distinctiveness. Gastown is a refreshing mix of old and new, downhome and upscale, a place for tourists, Vancouver residents and office workers alike.

Beautiful Vancouver

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S2djYG-W-6I/AAAAAAAAALg/eF6ivcWf77o/s200/English%2520Bay-768170.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433420741285968802" />
Vancouver is truly one of the world's most beautiful and most perfect places to visit or live. It is a sophisticated, fun loving, outdoor living city with a vibrant, prosperous downtown core.

Don't miss the new harbourside Convention Centre, so green it has grass growing on the roof. From its windows, you can see Stanley Park and the North Shore Mountains in one direction and downtown Vancouver in the other. You can watch float planes take off and land in the Burrard Inlet, cruise ships arriving and departing in summer and boats and ships sailing, rowing or motoring back and forth year round.

One tenth of Vancouver's nearly 600,000 inhabitants live downtown, most in innovative, high rise apartment buildings that feature glass and more glass showcasing the city's light and views. Along with its downtown, Vancouver has many mature, thriving, well defined neighbourhoods with locally owned businesses, a clearly defined identity and a community feel. Each presents a unique view of the city.

Moreover, Vancouver has one of the most diverse populations in North America and with that diversity comes all the benefits: great new ideas, an embracing, cooperative spirit, ethnic food, shops, customs and celebrations.

In Vancouver, you can swim in English Bay or Second Beach, kayak in False Creek or ride horses in Southlands. Twenty minutes away, in the North Shore mountains, you can ski and snowboard in winter and hike or mountain bike in summer.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S2djkxVKP6I/AAAAAAAAALo/Ex8H9r31tqI/s200/grouse-mountain-vancouver-cdn1083.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433420958814322594" />From Vancouver you are only 63 km from Victoria. Located on Vancouver Island, Victoria, British Columbia's capital, is another of the world's most beautiful cities. You can get from downtown Vancouver to downtown Victoria in 35 minutes by float plane or three and a half hours by bus and ferry. You are only 120 km from Whistler, one of the world's most spectacular winter ski resorts and summer playground and the site, along with Vancouver, of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

In February 2010, all the world will visit Vancouver for the Olympics, either actually or virtually, and they will discover its magic. We suggest you join them. And if you don't make it for the Olympics, come visit in the spring, summer or fall. The uniquely close relationship that Dutch sport fans have with their heroes - coupled with their penchant for the national colour of orange - makes for a vibrant and unforgettable atmosphere during celebrations and performances. More than 100,000 people visited the Holland Heineken House during Winter Games in Turin and 95,000 at the Beijing Olympics. At the last Summer Games, supporters were able to celebrate a total of 16 medals for the Dutch Olympic Team. There are plans for HH to serve beer to 4,000 people nightly at its Medal Ceremony Hall and stay open from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. The Heineken House will be located at Minoru Arenas 7551 Minoru Gate in Richmond.

LiveCity Downtown

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/S14dC-Ib9qI/AAAAAAAAALQ/q-4WSIfCTv8/s200/vancouver-600.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430810137530726050" />This site located at Georgia and Beatty will open during both the Olympic and Paralympic Games and will be Vancouver’s version of a downtown “piazza” with a large outdoor screen, daytime interactive school programming, engaging street entertainment, and late-night entertainment. Additional partners and governmental agencies will bring programs and pavilions to complement the site. The site will be open and programmed throughout the Olympic period commencing the day after the Opening Ceremony and concluding right before the Closing Ceremony (February 13-February 28). During that period it is anticipated that LiveCity Downtown will be open daily from 11am through to midnight. The site will reopen during the Paralympic period (March 12 through March 21) with a mix of on-screen programming, demonstration sport events and entertainment. Both the Canada and Manitoba pavilions will be on-site.

Nightly Medal Awards Ceremony

This is the most inexpensive way to participate in an official Olympic event. Tickets costs as little as $22 dollars per person and this provides you access to some of North America’s best entertainers as well as the medal winning athletes. Some of the confirmed bands include Barenaked Ladies, INXS, Nelly Furtado, Headley, Theory of a Dead Man and many more. The warm confines of the newly renovated BC Place Stadium will play home to this nightly event which is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. If you are taking the Expo Line SkyTrain, get off at the "Stadium" station. You will have to walk about 5 minutes to get there. A note for out-of-town visitors, BC Place will undergo a massive renovation after the Games and will have a brand new retractable roof installed.

Free Events During the Olympics

Be sure to check out these free events during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics!

Canada Pavillion

Centrally located at Vancouver's LiveCity Downtown Celebration Site, the Canada Pavilion will demonstrate Canada's commitment to creative excellence, sustainable development and fostering diversity with informative and innovative content that is sure to make Canadian's proud. There’s no better way to see it all than by setting out on foot, and experienced hikers know that autumn is the best time for day hikes: crisp and clear, the high country is still free from the deep snows of winter.

So strap on your boots, grab your camera, and get out there – but always remember that it’s important to be fully equipped and prepared. Here follows a sampling of fabulous fall hikes in British Columbia, where you’ll find plenty of views to inspire the soul.

Vancouver, Coast & Mountains

The Grouse Grind
Length: 2.9 kilometers
Vertical: 853 meters (2,798 feet)
Estimated time to complete: 1.5 hours

A winding trail that scrambles up Grouse Mountain’s southern slope in North Vancouver, the Grind has become British Columbia’s best-known hike. It’s certainly well named – with an average grade of 30 degrees, it’s a steep, thigh-burning trail boasting an elevation gain of 853 meters (2,798 feet) as it climbs through the forest from the Valley Station to the peak plateau. (In all, there are 2,800 steps built into the trail.) The Grind was completed in the early 1980s, and it’s a must for locals and travelers alike. And though you probably won’t match the trail record of 24 minutes—for the average adult, it’s about an hour and a half—a trip up the Grind will give you a first-hand view of Vancouver’s unique urban and outdoor cultures. The best way down? Hop aboard the scenic Grouse Mountain Skyride, where a $5 one-way ride offers stunning views of the city.

www.grousemountain.com

The Trails of Garibaldi
Length: varies, depending on the trail or trails chosen
Vertical: challenging; between 600 meters (1,968 feet) to over 900 meters (2,952 feet)
Estimated time to complete: depending on trail, can range from two to four hours (one way)

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_es-qlCsVsTc/SyvkXOX7X9I/AAAAAAAAAIw/STG0w4R-L5c/s200/lake_girabaldi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416674064489734098" />As you drive north from Vancouver, you pass into Sea to Sky country. Just outside the town of Squamish, Garibaldi Provincial Park holds some of the province’s most dramatic scenery; there are dozens of great trails in the Garibaldi area, but serious hikers will want to head for the Taylor Meadows and Garibaldi Lakes campgrounds. Departing from there, you’ll be able to access Black Tusk, the jagged remnants of an ancient volcano (note: taking on the Tusk can add, at minimum, four hours to your trek). There are also high trails like Panorama Ridge, where glaciers and striated ranges lead off to the far horizon. Garibaldi may prove a challenging place to hike – but it is one rife with rewards.

Border Prep for the 2010 Olympic's

<img style="float:left;
